Christmas in Mexico City

If you are a Christmas lover… Mexico is one of the countries that you can’t skip in your travel plans.

The beginning of the festivities is marked with Las Posadas, nine consecutive days of celebration starting December 16th where families and friends gather to recreate the Mary and Joseph quest for lodging in Bethlehem. The breaking of a piñata and the traditional food like “Ponche” (hot fruit punch) is a rigorous part of this celebration.

Noche Buena is the end of the Christmas festivities with a midnight mass (Misa de Gallo). Afterwards, families head home for a traditional party with traditional dishes: bacalao a la vizcaína (Biscayan cod), romeritos (wild greens with mole), stuffed turkey with beef, raisins and nuts, pasta, bueñuelos and sweet apple salad. The evening is rounded out with a toast, a round of hugs, piñatas and sparklers. These happy gatherings generally last until December 25th and for this reason Christmas is set aside as a day to rest and enjoy leftovers.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit Mexico City on these dates.
